This week was all about text. As I am roughing in the overall scene design, I am turning more specifically to the basic text in the module as it relates to the learning outcomes defined by the client.

I engaged the personalization principle the minute I typed the first few words of the module. The Institutional Review Board and submissions for approval of research studies is a very serious and rigid subject. It can be daunting, and attention to appropriate language and gravitas is key. However, this tutorial is for new, one-time users, visitors to the eResearch Portal for whom the seriousness and language may be new. So, it was important to me to set the learner at ease from the beginning with a conversational and disarming tone. I often use this in my music teaching studio and in other teaching environments for which the subject or seriousness can create problems with audience engagement.

While the rest of the text in the module will follow the tone set by the text found in the eResearch portal, I found this very brief and unique opportunity to create a user-friendly environment for the learner in the early stages of the user experience.
